Double sink backs up when garbabe disposal is run.
Author: Enzo (MO)

I have a double sink in the basment kitchen. When I fill the sink or both sinks up, and release the water, they both drain fine. Like really good. Nice funnel and all. But if I fill the side with the G/B and run the G/B, the water eventually starts bubbling up on the empty sink side. Crud and all. I have 1 1/2" sch 40 P-trap. What going on? I've taken everything apart and cleaned. I'm out of ideas. A drain cleanout company said it did not sound like a drain problem.
?? What do I do next? Need picures?

Thanks,
Enzo

the disposal will push the water down faster. you have a restricted line past where you can take it apart

If this is a new problem you have a blockage like dlh said. I have seen a baffle tee installed upside down before which really will shoot the water out of the adjacent drain when using the garbage disposal. Seal off gd drain side and try to plunge it first. If this doesnt work You can try to seal other drain and air gap/dishwasher drain line if you have one and force water down the garbage disposal. Once in awhile you can clear a close blockage doing this but dont count on it. If this doesnt work you may have to have it snaked. Dont use acid.

Get a different drain cleaning company, and have them unplug the drain line. Period.

That's what I'm thinking, maybe still a blockage, like behind the wall. I checked the continuous waste T,and the baffle is correct and clean. Does it matter if the continuous waste T is installed under the GD, or under the other sink?

No! It depends on where the opening is in the wall, although common practice puts the tee under the sink drain, not the disposer.

pffft, it is best under the disposal as the other way adds at least 1 but usually 2 (most common set up other than best practice) 90 deg. turns thus slowing the junk from the disposer which can and will cause more blockages

HOW do you connect the drain when the tee is under the sink. MOST plumbers use a straight pipe from the disposer to the tee, NOT TWO 90 degree turns. Thus it is MORE DIRECT, than when it is at the disposer.

Well, I got two choices; 1) try it with the tee at the disposal side for the fun of it, and 2) get the drain unplugged. Does it matter that I'm getting very good drainage from either sink, with funnel and all. Can it still mean I have a blockage downstream where I can't get to it?

yes you can still have a restriction down the line that only shows up when the g/d pushes the water down with force

hj, i still say the trap under the disposer and the waste arm going across is the better set up than running the disposer outlet across but to each his own

NOt only could you, but more than likely you DO. I had one a week ago where the customer told me that several plumbers told her that, "That is just the way it is so you will have to live with it". That morning she told her husband she would do anything if that drain would work properly, so he called me. (It was doing the same thing as yours.) I cleared the drain, and it works PERFECTLY now.

The Mississippi River runs great most of the time. But when the flow increases, like your drain when you use the disposer, it ALSO backs up.
