Hi,
My house is three story, my kitchens on each floor drains into a single pipe that connects to the main sewer line that leads out the street. Basically, every time, I turn on water in my kitchens, it goes into the basement utility sink. My contractor told me the pipe is rusted from the inside, hence it will not drain probably, and recommend that reconnect this pipe onto my other pipe that is used for bathrooms. Here's my questions, could a house built in 1970 already have a pipe that is so completely rusted that nothing can be done, except to cut and reattach to another pipe. I want to avoid cutting these pipes. The house seems so need to have such a major problem, can't I just use power drain augers instead?

If your drains are galvanized, they will rust the way you were told. Add to that the sludge created by soap & grease, and you have a blockage similar to cholesterol in your arteries.
Even ABS pipes can get blocked up.
If you can't get them open using a power auger, get them Hi-Pressure jetted.

Find a plumber in your area with a snake and get his option!I do not normally see tubing this young at a failure point.

Good Luck. Insulate your hot piping, although costly, it will pay you back every day.
