Wife wants all the hardware in bathroom changed from chrome to bronze. All is going well despite the many conversations about this project. House is five years old. I removed the guts of the chrome drain in the fiberglass tub and inserted the handles of a pair of pliers into two of the four holes and used a 10" cresent wrench to try and remove the bezel. I suspect the plummers putty around the trim is preventing me from turning out the assembly and is there any secret way to get this thing out without getting into trouble or using C-4plastic explosive?
Many thanks in advance for any help or advise

plumbers putty is not an adhesive...it does nothing to make it harder to remove
you need to buy the proper tool to put into the drain...its shaped like a dumbbell
it will unthread

IT is NOT the plumber's putty around the rim, but it may be the plumber's putty the installer got on the threads of the drain piece. If "reasonable" force does not unscrew it, then the only safe way is to carefully cut it out, or better yet, call a plumber to do it without damaging the tub or drain fitting.

It is okay to buy a dumbell, but DO NOT be one by overstressing the drain fitting so it snaps off under the tub. I have had to cut out almost as many as have unscrewed.

I have called a licensed plummer as I have no plans on tearing out a damaged tub because I screwed up the drain.
Thanks to all for the guidance.
