 water hammer
Author: tommyb (NY)

I've got a customer who is getting a water hammer when faucets[mostly cold] when you close them.Checked house pressure and it's at 60 psi. There is a hot water coil and storage tank. The water hammer is coming from the cold water make-up.Thought about putting a thermal expansion type tank on the inlet but the relief valve is not blowing off.Any thoughts?Maybe a water arrestor?

the expansion tank will act as a hammer arrestor..

So the expansion tank is preferable to the arrestor?

What type check is used? a soft one may correct the problem.Spring not swing.

Good Luck. Insulate your hot piping, although costly, it will pay you back every day.

Not necessarily. It depends on how far the hammer source is from the tank. If it is being caused by the faucets closing, then the closer the "arrestor device" is to the faucet the better the chance of canceling it. If it is caused by a pressure imbalance in a mechanical device, then the tank will not help and might increase the problem.

There is a swing check on the 3/4 make-up.Twenty feet from the nearest fixture to the hammer.

If there were an expansion tank at the heater, for example, and opening a cold water faucet created a pressure drop, then the "stored" pressure in the expansion might "slam" the check valve closed if it were partially open at the time. Otherwise, assuming the check valve is already closed as it should be, it should not be the cause of the noise.

take a long screw driver stick it between the check valve and your ear and have someone create the hammer. It will let you know if the check is slamming shut.Steel of the screw driver against the brass of the check handle against your ear.Same way old mechanics listened to car parts.
