I got a plan the other day to bid...in the spec's it says 'cast iron drain pipe'
I am still verifying thats what they really want
do they make 1 1/2" cast iron? how do you handle stubouts for sinks?
im not sure how to do the male adaptor for the trap kit.
i cant wait to figure out the price on this one..its a big house too!

Usually around here, they want the larger pipes and stacks made of CI for sound/noise reasons. In most cases the smaller branches will still be pvc.

you really need to get the specs in writing. where to transition from cast iron to pvc must be spelled out.
if they want all concealed drains to be cast iron, you would stick a 2" 90 or a piece of 2" out of the wall and use a 2 x 1 1/2 no-hub coupling to transition to PVC under the cabinet.
if the trap is chrome, you would leave a threaded adapter (2" no-hub x 1 1/2" Female) with a nipple and cap in it (for test).
at least all the vents can be PVC but still best to get it in writing.
P/S, my ryobi 18V lithium drill set on #20 gives me the right amount of touque.
lastly, a chop saw with a carborundum wheel is noisy and dusty but gives accurate cuts.
lastly, lastly, use those go-over closet flanges with the rubber that tightens via stainless bolts.

They do make 1 1/2" cast iron, but I do not know who would ever use it. I never used less than 2". You use tapped fittings for the sink openings, with nipples and brass trap adapters or male brass trap adapters, depending on how deep in the wall you bury the connection.

does the spec also dictate how joints are to be made, I am curious.

The only options would be No-Hub or MG couplings, and if MG are specified it is usually for the underground portion.

They don't do rubber gasket or lead joints on new construction anymore?

if they use pipe with a hub they will use the rubber gaskets and they still use it a lot in my area for underground work.
lead and oakum joints are just about extinct

Check, but I believe shoe has the answer they are looking to quite the drain noise that pvc in a wall creates. We call it quite pipe here now.

Good Luck. Insulate your hot piping, although costly, it will pay you back every day.

They could but IF they did, it would usually only be underground with No-Hub, or plastic, above ground. I am not sure if modern plumbers even know how to make a lead joint. They probably think they have to go to a museum and see a diorama of cave men standing around a fire with a lead pot full of molten lead in it to know what a lead joint is.
