We have a fairly new (2 years) water heater. It has begun to vary widely in temperature. Sometimes (after a long period of no use) the water is fairly cool. While taking a shower we have to use hot water only. Other times (also after a long period of no use) it seems to be the correct temperature which is about 120 F.
I don't think it did this when new. What could be causing this?
This is a Sears unit. The model number is 153.339461 & the ID 9211703010

I would guess it could be a build up of minerals on the temp probe of the gas valve..... or maybe a bad gas valve.

Gas, but unless Sears uses a different numbering system than normal, and it is possible, that would be a November 1992 water heater.

State and its variations use a letter for the year and a number for the month. AO Smith also has their own system.

AO Smith has the month and year coded, but there is a second combination of a single letter and two numbers which gives the year for an approximation of the age.
