sizing a boiler and outdoor resets
Author: pattibuderus (ME)

I'm looking to replace an old boiler with a buderus G115.
one installer recommends a g115/5 z(gross output 136 BTUs with 119,000 net BTUS) and calculated the size of the unit based on 135 ft of baseboard X 650 then added 10,000 BTUS to cover heating the copper tubing in the basement.
I would be running a superstar indirect with the boiler.
Another installer says that a g115/3 (gross output 85,000 btus with 74,000 net) is the correct size unit. He multipled 121 ft of baseboard X 600.

the first installer claims that the boiler the second person recommends is too small.

Does anyone know which size I should go with?

I also was told that a taco outdoor reset will work as well as the logomatic and is easier to fix and less costly to purchase and replace. Does anyone know if the taco will work as well as the logomatic?

thank you.

More is involved in arriving at the correct size than just computing the heat load of the baseboard. A heat load calculation based on the house construction must be done. But....for Maine- I think the second size boiler is undersized. It would probably do for MD, but we don't get night temps of -10*, either.

600 btu per foot is a little light, especially if you are running the water temperature at 200. (might be needed for 10 below nights)
go with the 115-4 and you'll be fine.
i wouldn't spend extra money for a logimatic control.
neither would i use an outdoor reset control.
the beckett heat manager works very well and is not expensive to buy or install.

make sure to pipe the superstor feed and return with 1" pipe. also use a high speed circulator.
p/s, a 115-5 is overkill.

Agree on the boiler size with Packy. disagree on the Beckett Mangager. The taco or Tekmar units (Tekmar makes them for Taco) are much more controlable.
