 Water backing up
Author: rgarza (TX)

House built in the early 1970's, It is a reverse floor plan. In other words kitchen & master bath on 2nd floor, additional 2 bathrooms & laundry room downstairs. Kitchen & master bath are on the same wall as 2nd bath downstairs. When the kitchen sink is drained after doing dishes, the bathtub downstairs gurgles and backs up into tub. A nasty smell comes out and water slowly drains leaving some black debris on tub floor surface. We do not put anything down the sink that would cause plumbing issues. Any guesses what could be happening? By the way my wife says she has had to have a plumber come out about every 18 monts to snake pipe. We do have a septic system.

Good Luck. Insulate your hot piping, although costly, it will pay you back every day.

Having a septic system means that you have to be more careful and alert for problems. When was the last time the tank was pumped and inspected for defect and damage.
Don't mess with septic systems because when they burp, people listen.

Get a real licensed plumber and have the system evaluated.
Best Wishes

you have a plug somewhere...hire a different drain cleaner to fix it.

i did a repipe from the house to the septic tank a couple of weeks ago. The pipe had broken off and dropped 4"...completely plugging the system..it took 3 people to figure it out...rotorooter didnt even take the main cleanout plug off...my favorite drain cleaner found it...

hire someone new/better...maybe get your pipes camera'd after to see whats happening

Thanks for your response. We did have the septic pumped and checked a couple of months ago, so I'm not sure it is the septic system (but it is not out of the question). One thing I forgot to mention is that I can turn on the water at the tub where it backs up and the water drains without a problem. It's when the kitchen upstairs gets drained that it happens. Very, very strange. I agree that maybe a camera snake is in order though.

do you have a clean out that will tell you if the water is backing before or at the septic connection? You need to know!

IF the septic system is "flooded" then there will be water in the system up to a certain elevation. When you use water in the house at a normal rate, the "flood" level can rise to gradually absorb it. But a sudden rapid flow, such as water descending from an upper level can inject the water faster than it can be absorbed, and then you have a "momentary" backup until things can stabilize themselves.

IF the septic system is flooded, as I referred to previously, the system will be filled with water up to a certain level, and if that is the case, a video camera will be worthless, since it does not give a good picture, if any, underwater.
