Hi,
We have a leaky diverter valve in one of the showers in a home we are purchasing. The seller's plumber says that this type of diverter is "designed to leak some water so as to not form a vacuum in the drop tube".
I have never heard of such a thing. Could this be true or is this just some line to avoid repairs?
Thank you for your advice.

It depends on how bad it is leaking and where the leak is going. If there is just a trickle from the tub spout then yes it is nothing to worry about. Anything more than that and I would say he is blowing smoke.

He is blowing smoke regardless of whether the diverter is supposed to leak or not. If it is, it is because the manufacturer wanted to be sure that the standing water leaked out so the diverter would revert back to the tub side. That way, when the valve is turned on again, the user is not hit in the face with a slug of cold water. But, whether the leak is intentional or not depends on how it was made, and without a make and model we cannot decide that.

ive had vacuum breakers leak for a bit when you turn the water off to the hand held....basically relieving the pressure..is this what your talking about?...the diverter itself should not leak
