This has happened a couple of times, but this time it cost me about $20 more on my water bill. The outside faucet (which we rarely use) just turns itself on. I am not talking like a drip-it will go from off to a nice stream. Any ideas?

You probably have one of the "newer" Arrowhead ones with the rapid open and close feature. If so, they abandoned that version because they opened too easily, and water pressure could push the stem open.

Hmmm I don't think anything on my house is newer It was built in '79 and I'm pretty sure it's original to the house.

As a simple/cheap temporary fix you can cap off the hose connection of the outdoor faucet using one of these. That way water can't escape if the faucet tries to turn itself on. You can get caps like this at Home Depot, etc. [images.orgill.com]

You can also use one of these gadgets that connects to your hosebib I have one from them that is not a splitter and just a normal short section of "kink free" rubber hose but it has an inline shutoff.

In that case it is either very worn, or the packing nut is too loose. If that is the case it should leak water from the handle when it is turned on.

neither the cap nor the 2 way hose adapter are good fixes and should be considered temporary unless you shut the water off to that faucet in the winter to avoid it freezing
can you post a picture of the faucet?

Am I missing something here? Is this a standard threaded hose bib? Just install a new one.

We will not know until we see a picture, but around here the original installers usually solder them on.

Oh, probably easier to tighten a packing nut for a diy then. In cali the soldered on hose bibs usually are on condos or newer homes. I hate this method. If you are going to solder, at least solder on a threaded fitting for future ease of replacement.

Might as well use a stainless flex then.

Use a "stainless steel flex" for what? The adapters cost at least fifty cents apiece and that may make the difference between a profit or loss on the job.
