Has anyone else here ever walked into a house and found the boiler floating in 6ft. or raw sewage. Only to find that the septic system has been failed for years and the plumbing has been backing out of the laundry connection long enough to get this high. How about finding hidden syringes in the baseboard radiation next to a pile of dirty diapers. I unfortunately have seen homes in the worst possible condition and had to help the poor soles that were living there. Do you think that there is any way that we as a group of caring people can do anything to prevent things like this from happening? The EPA is worried about us disturbing lead paint but knows nothing about the filth that surrounds a huge percentages of Americans. Should a support/report system be put in place ?

only problem is that they are private people in private residences so unless there is some kind of complaint that leads to the discovery by authorities, there is little we can do to even find people living in those conditions.

there are a lot more than you would think

One septic cleaner found a layer of condoms when he opened the tank to clean it. He told the husband they should not be flushed down the toilet. He told the cleaner that he didn't use them because he had a vasectomy years earlier. Must have been a messy divorce.

That same thing happened with a plugged up sewage pump at woman's house who's teenage daughter was using the in-law apartment...
I don't know who paid that bill...

Funny you mention condoms in the septic tank hj. We hooked up a new public sewer at a house that the husband was watching us pump out the tank and the same thing happened. YES!! In this case it DID lead to a messy divorce! That happened many years ago and we still joke about it.

Shoe, you ask if we as a group can prevent the horrors you describe. Bud, by the time we come across situations you mention, the damage has been done by people who use free will. Can we prevent it? How can a noble plumber stop a drug addict or slum lord or a cheating husband?
I wish I had a tool in my box for those. All I know is to do the best I can.
P.S. I've been in crawlspaces and found dead animals, mold spores 3" high growing off old feces, and taken showers in sewer juice. I have never seen a boiler floating in raw sewage, however, if I do encounter one, can I have your number?
