What should a plumber who has four years in the field be capable of doing and what should he know?

I have about two with residential install and service and almost two of commercial experience.

This is being asked so I can gauge where I am at and where I should be.

What you should know and what you do know may be two different things. You will only KNOW what you have had experience or training about. If all you have done is install above ground/top out plumbing, for example, you will probably have no experience using a transit or dumpy level to grade ditches or piping. Nor will you be able to tranfer information from the blueprint to the jobsite to layout piping locations. The opposite is also true. This occurs most often in large companies which have speciallized crews for the different phases. A small company with a diverse clientele will expose its employees to a much broader range of experiences. A plumber can work for a large company for many years and still not have the experience that a small company's employee has.

you should be able to start and complete a job with little or no help from others (except labor)

i love the fact that you have experience in residential and commercial construction and challenge you to learn service the next time you are looking for something new.

your experience, imo, makes you a better choice for hire over say someone that just has experience in residential construction

You should be to the point of being considered "Dangerous";). Meaning you should be able to work on your own.

in WI a Journeyman used to be only 4 years....so by 4 years you should be able to do Journeyman work....I was on my own roughing houses at 4 years...I also got bumped to Journeyman pay too....

I had a horrible apprenticeship too...spent 6 month layed off and 1 year digging & back filling

so at 4 years you should be able to work completely on your own with maybe a phone call once in a while to ask a question.
