My bathroom sink gurgles when it drains and most times has a bad odor.
It has been cleaned with the foaming tipe drain cleaner.
The vent is within a foot of where the drain enters the big pipe under the house.
Could a one way check valve be put in close to the big pipe to keep the gasses
from comeing up to the sink?
Thanks for any help.

Is there a trap on the sink? If so, there should not be a smell coming back through the drain. Try using a vinegar/Baking soda solution to clean the drain and if there are overflow ports in the sink, try to get some of the solution into it.

The gurgling could very well be a restriction. Vinegar will not resolve that issue until your waste line has been rodded to the next size line. The odor might be unrelated to the first issue.
A licensed plumber could resolve both issues with one call.

your problem is a restricted drain that is allowing siphoning to occur.
get the drain cleaned by a professional and your problems should go away
