Iv'e got a Kohler low boy one piece toilet mfg date about 1985. I have changed the flush ball twice and it still is leaking. This is the kind that has a ball and a copper wire attached for the lift. I checked the surface where the ball meets the seating area and it is free from nicks, wear or anything else that would not cause it to seal. I fill the tank, shut off the water supply and within a 1/2 hour, the water level is down 2 inches. What's my next step?

is the lift wire straight? If it is bent it will not seat properly.

Wire is straight and the ball is lowering into position just as it should be.

Then it must be the ball, if everything else is installed properly. Can you take a picture of the inside of the tank?

I would try a different tank ball as HJ suggested. If you have the Kohler one-piece that has the flush valve and fill valve combined as one unit, try the tite-seal tank ball, I have had good luck with those on those models. If the tank ball does not work, than you either need the complete rebuid kit or a new toilet.
See if your flush valve/fill valve look like these:[www.plumbingsupply.com]

I think I found the answer to the problem. There is a rubber gasket that goes on the rim wash tube that is not all the way in place. After the tank fills, water from the tank drains thru this gasket into the bowl. When the water level in the tank lowers then more water is added and the process starts over again. I just bent the float arm so the tank doesn't fill up to the leaking gasket level. No more running toilet. Toilet works fine. We are selling the house so this fix will probably last until closing of the house. Thanks for your help, the toilet diagram, and the phone numbers.

The rim wash opening is NOT supposed to be sealed, nor is the water level supposed to be that high. IF you had told us the water level was above that point, then we would have told you to lower the water level. WE cannot diagnose a condition that should not be present in a properly adjusted toilet tank.
