 Toilet Auger
Author: Rick Laser (CA)

Time for me to bite the bullet and get myself a toilet auger. I see they come in 3 foot and 6 foot lengths - why the big difference? Any recommendations on the type to get? Any danger of thhe auger getting stuck in the trap? 95 percent of our clogs are large stools - not foreign objects. Although some of these stools are unearthly in size. Thanks!

you shouldnt need 6' and there is such a difference since that is how long the metal part is.

i prefer the general wire and cable auger but the ridig one works also

Big Orange carries several augers. I know better than to get the cheapest one. I'll get a mid-price one 3 foot length. They probably have the ones mentioned.

thanks for the very descriptive post; is this why most plumbers prefer to be in construction vs. service?

i use the general with a drop head. it also can extend 3 more feet at the push of a button.i like the extention because it not only goes all the way through the stool but can reach into the waste arm ,somtimes to the drop. also is a very good at proving to the people that you truly have went out as far as possible and it is time to pull the stool.

PlumerDan, I agree 100% for the price difference GET the 6' model, then at least you know you did everything you could to clear the closet. For less than 70 or so bucks in Cali you can have the best and leave the rest

The 6' ones are "extensible" versions, and they are often more bother than they are worth. There is NO toilet that has a 3' passage, much less a 6' one so the extra length is of little benefit, if the stoppage is in the toilet. In addition, a plumger usually dislodges any soft stoppage.

No. It is because they do not know how to do service, or they do not like to deal with people/customers. Some plumbers just like to put their brains in neutral once they get to the jobsite and let the foreman tell them what to do and how to do it.

The trouble to push the button and pull the extra 3' out, when you already have the first 3' in the toilet can be a pain in the tookus, especially after a couple of years when the parts have started to stick together.

HMM, HJ I have a 6' that has been riding around in the truck for 12 years, I used the 6' option twice last month and it solved the problem. Tri-Flow Teflon Spray works wonders on the stinking little button that likes to stick due to rust. When it is used at full length it is ALWAYS SPRAYED with Tri-Flow after the fact. You do have a point about NO w/c having a trapway longer than 3'. Why does the extra length work when the std will not?

Thanks to all for the opinions. I value them all. I will go to Big Orange tomorrow to see what they have.

No idea, but I used my extension about twice, but it was not in a toilet, Trying to hold the cable OUT, while pushing the pin, AND pulling the handle up usually took at least three hands which is why I said it was a pain in the derriere.

I try inject a little reason when hyperbole seems to be the rule. An extension closet auger, while it may be useful once or twice during its lifetime, in not essential to the average homeowner. And since he may only use it a few times a year, it WILL rust up if he does not think to lubricate it periodically. I have a LOT of experience with closet augers, and do NOT recommend them as a matter of course. In addition, the process of making them "extendible" also makes them much bulkier, and expensive to repair when, or if, the snake breaks.

My feelings exactly....I think they are more of a hassle than they are worth.

For what an extensible costs, it might very well be.

I think a cheap auger is a bad idea.

I wound up using one of those because the home owner had it and my company at the time was not providing one.

The cheap one just got caught in the WC and broke.

I'd buy a General or Rigid.

... three feet.
