 parts and tool question
Author: akamon (GA)

Haven't posted in a while and hope everyone is doing well.
Anyone found a decent pro pack / assortment of packing bonnet stem washers; preferably the fiber type. Can't seem to find anything online that fits the bill.
Also, anyone found a handle puller that has an extra long stem, the part that fits where the screw goes. Find that many shower valve stems are too deep and puller won't bottom out and work. Or do you have a trick for this situation.
thanks in advance

ummm, what kind of puller are you using that the threads of the puller goes into a cartridge? usually the end that isnt threaded should not be able to inter where the threads for the handles screw goes

In most cases if I need a handle puller they need a new faucet. Except in the cases that I can break the stem and replace stem and handle IE; Symmons S-96

If you keep a brass screw box you can cut off the head slot the screw and insert using a micro flat head.Be aware the brass may flatten the slot if to much force is created by the puller.I would have to agree at this point snapping the handle off and replacing the handle and stem would be the way to go.If your working on stuff that has outdated parts, have fun.

When that happens I use a "hammer type" puller. It grabs the handle the same way, but it has a sliding weight that you ram backwards to pull the handle off. You can also put the screw part way in, and push against that, but if it is real tight the screw might deform. A better way would be to have a selection of "allen cap screws", which are hardened, and the puller's pin would fit into the allen wrench recess.

A bit draconian solution. I have had very few, like maybe a dozen or less, which would not pull off.
