 Cleanout Plug - how tight?
Author: sum (FL)

When you turn the cleanout plug how tight do you make it?

Do you hand tight it as much as you can?

Or do you use a plumber's plier and tighten it all the way?

The guy who came to jet my place tightened it with all his might. If you remember a couple of months ago, I did the same thing when I investigated a CO that was of my neighbor's line (but I thought it was mine) and I closed it with a plier real hard, so hard that it basically broke the hub off the two way cleanout below causing a big headache. So now I am being very careful.

So I unscrewed all 8 CO he tighened with my plier, and then retightene them "semi-loosely". Is that OK?

Also a related question. I have a 3" CO on a stack installed previously by a plumber. It is PVC and the CO is on a test tee sitting in a vertical position. He put pipe dope on the CO plug then tighten. Is this common practice? Why pipe dope on PVC CO plug? I have only used pipe dope on threaded metal supply line, is it typical to use pipe dope on PVC threads too? Does it make an air tight seal?

pipe dope that is approved for plastic pipe is fine to use on clean out plugs. looser is better than tighter for a cleanout plug.

if the cleanout plug is in a house or closet or somewhere nice you should tighten it snugly. If it's at the exterior of a house or coming out of the ground you can tighten it, but I've left them loose and come across customers who want them left very loose to warn them of a blockage. Especially if it's a chronic reoccuring blockage.

I use teflon tape on plastic threads.

Did you get the broken snake out out the 3" drain?

ALL threads need a sealant if there is water flowing past them. Usually snug is tight enough, but it depends on the situation. If the plug leaks, then tighten it further.

I ONLY use Teflon tape on plastic to plastic connections, if I use it at all.
