 Hot water to tub
Author: MichGalRN (MI)

Hot water works all over my house except to the tub. I've checked that crawl space and have found no leaks. Any suggestions? I surely appreciate any help.

Would have to be there and trace the progress of the hot water as it moves toward the tub, unless you have a temperature limiting stop under the handle that is set too low.

I guess I should clarify that I get no water. I get cold water but when I turn to hot, I get nothing.

In that case you must have a pressure balanced single handle faucet, and the balancing spool is stuck on the cold side. I could probably free it, but your best option may be to replace the faucet's cartridge. How you do that, and where you get the cartridge, depends on the make and model of the faucet.

You know, I have owner's manuals for everything in my house...even the toaster! However, I can't for the life find the documentation for the tub faucet. I do know that it is a Price Pfister and that it has a single handle.

You guys rock.

It looks like "marielle" model # 808-M0BK

Definitely a stuck balancing spool. If you contact the warranty dept. for Price Phister they should send a new part.

Is it easy to replace? I can't even figure out how to remove the faucet handle!

it is not too hard if your are at all handy. Just be sure to turn off the water.
You can get a manual on line.

OMG, thank you so much! That is exactly what I needed (but you knew that- hehe).

One more question (I hope), I searched for "balancing spool" at both the Lowes and Home Depot websites. Neither came up with anything. Would they carry such a thing?

If you look at the 2nd PDF it is part E and they call it a cartridge.

OK, I'll call and get another.

In the meantime, I've got the thing out (way easy!), is there anything I can do to "free it"? I would love to take a shower tonight. I'm quite sure my daughter would love it if I took a shower tonight!

sure take a cold shower tonight :), but if you want a hot one better wait till that new cartridge arrives and then I suggest you get someone experienced to install it. Good luck.

Really? It was so easy to get out, what's going to be difficult about installing the new one?

Nothing if you got it out you can put it back.
You may be able to free it up by gently banging it around until the part inside loosens up.

Whew, thanks.

I've already put the old one in. I must have put it in upside down, but it doesn't matter because I'm not taking a shower in there anyway!

I can't tell you guys how much I appreciate your help. You have made "doable" a task that I considered quite daunting!

Tap it on the floor a couple of times and then shake it. If you feel something moving back and forth inside it, it will work again.

Nothing other than being sure not to reverse it. But if you can stand ALL hot water, and you cannot get it to work, install the piece backwards, but turn the water heater temperature down first and draw off enough water to reduce the tank's temperature.
