DIFFERENCE B-TWEEN HOSE BIBBS, WALL HYDRANTS
Author: BRAD1977 (IL)

I dont know if they are the same but i hear plumbers ask for hose bibbs and wall hydrants. Are they the same? I thought hose bibbs were shorter and the wall hydrants were what you use to connect your water hose. Thanks in advance.

Wall hydrants are typically geared more towards commercial installations compared to hose bibbs, sill-cocks or some people refer to them as boiler drains, in which all can be used to connect hoses to.

Well different area different term.Hose bib here is male through the valve stop horizontal to turned outlet.Wall hydrant would be a sill cock closed inside a box.Sill cock would be a female through the valve with a turned outlet.Boiler drain, male valve 90 degree outlet.Good Luck.Search /www.plumbing supply. com\hose bib, sill cock.hydrant, boiler drain .There are many terms that mean slightly different thing's.In the supply house the guy who get's to keep his counter job, dose not need to know the manufacturers name, as much as the plumbers way of asking for it.

"hydrant" often implies Frost Free, and anti-backflow. But that is not cast in stone/

It would be a great question for a plumbing license test...
My guess is close to everyone would get it mixed up...
It's one of those things that many of us feel dumb and unsure of...

Wall hydrants, hose bibbs, boiler drains and locations.:)

In many homes and buildings built prior to the 70's the above valves were basically all the same and used in different locations for different needs and what distinguished there name was where they were installed.

Wall hydrants are typically used in commercial installations. They are usually built into the wall either with a brass housing or a locking box with a door on it.

Normally, a hose bibb is screwed into a fitting, a sill cock has a flange which fits against the wall, and a boiler drain has a right angle outlet.
