I have a single handle shower in my bathroom. I gutted the bathroom, but left the mixing valve in the wall, as it was not very old. The problem is that I've discarded the handle and trim ring that went with this mixing valve.
-are mixing valves all standard (i.e. can a mixing valve previously used for a Moen, be used on a new Kohler handle?)
-I started opening boxes at the Home Depot of shower handles/mixing valve assemblies, and they don't appear the same as mine.
My mixing valve has a brass cog type end that appears to slide into the shower handle and then is secured with a screw. I do have a picture of my mixing valve that I can forward if it helps anyone.

you will have to get the trim for that valve.
post your pic somewhere like photobucket.com and paste the url back here for us to see. we might be able to identify your valve

Nice job of cutting the opening. However it usually has to be about 5" in diameter, and when tile installers make a hole that neatly they often have to come back and make it the right size. That is not enough to tell us the manufacturer, but it could be Price Pfister.

There was previously the same type of shower wall material, and it was probably thicker, and that worked fine, so I'm hoping this is okay

The plumber probably left the job 20 years ago and the plaster ring was thrown away about the same time.

Go to Kohlers website and pick out a trim kit that you like that fits on the K-304 valve. Kerching! $$$$$$$$$$

If it is, and depending on the age, and model, one version has the trim plate bolt holes on the core of the valve, but the newer version has them on the body so the two do not interchange.

As always with Kohler there are many mouse traps for each model as the engineers kept drawing and drawing and drawing.

Our JR Smith rep has a cartoon, with a man with a whip standing outside the door to the R&D department. The person answering the door is saying, " There's a guy out here who wants to see the person who designed part number 57112."
