 Bubble Toilet Flush
Author: Joesann (MI)

Newbe here, Hello I have a problem when I flush the toilet a large air bubble comes up in the bowl. Sometimes not all the waste is removed with the flush. It is Gerber model one of the last of the large water waster tanks. I know it should be replaced to save water, but I still like to know why it's doing what it's doing. All comments would be great. Thanks

Is the bubble coming out from the water jet in the bottom of the bowl or is it coming back out from the toilet's trap?

If all the other Plumbing fixtures are operating properly, there's a good chance that the toilet bowl trapway has an obstruction in it. Plunging a toilet rarely works, in fact I never have plunged a toilet on a service call, always used a toilet auger to knock loose or retrieve the object.

But if the bubble is popping up out of the siphon jet it is something entirely different!

3.5 gpf Gerber toilets emit a bubble when flushed. Always did, even when new (and I've literally installed hundreds of them). The problem with the incomplete removal of waste is not a Gerber trait. Maybe needs new parts in tank or rim holes cleared (or both).

A bubble from the siphon jet could be several things as Jerco suggested clean the ports under the bowl rim. Another cause could be the bowl refill tube is not delivering enough water to refill the bowl or, the refill tube is not in place. A low water level in the bowl will also cause this problem. So without some answers we are just offering a couple of blind speculations.

The air bubble is coming out the water jet in the bottom of the bowl. When the toilet is flushed, the water level in the bowl drops below the top of the water jet hole. Could there be air getting into the water jet hole? The water level in the bowl seems to be toward the top of the bowl. This conceren just started, the toilet has been there for years. How would the refill tube cause air in the flush? Fun,Fun

If the bowl does not refill entirely and the level is too low a bubble may blow out of the siphon jet.

Also, take a piece of coat hanger wire and go around under the rim of the bowl. There are small holes that allow water to enter the bowl during the flush and refill. Take the wire and poke it into each one cleaning them out. If these holes are blocked the air in the internal water passages of the toilet can be pushed down to the siphon jet.

Make sure that the tank water level refills to the proper level. Either the marked waterline or, 5/8" below the top of the overflow tube.
