Clogs and bubbles from burping in the toilet
Author: jmrsmom (TN)

We bought a house a year ago and have had problems with the master bedroom toilet ever since we moved in. It clogs frequently and overflows. Now it has started bubbling when we flush it (almost like it is burping). The plumber came and snaked it, but there hasn't been any improvements. Any idea what the problem may be? We are on the city sewer.

If the Master bathroom toilet is on the ground level of the house, the underground building
drain may be clogged or partially restricted, or the main sewer, (leaving the house) may be
filling up because of a clog causing the problem.

If the toilet is let's say on the second floor and Plumbing fixtures below it are working
okay, I'd say there might be a problem with the toilet itself or a drain line very close to it.

What exactly did the Plumber do?
Did he say what he thinks it might be after not being able to correct the problem that you called him for?

Where are the bubbles coming from?

If they are coming up out of the trapway of the toilet (the outlet of the bowl where the waste goes when flushed) there is indeed some drain problem.

If they are coming out of the siphon jet (The hole at the bottom of the bowl that water comes out of when the toilet is flushed pushing water and waste out of the trapway) the problem is the ports under the rim are clogged and possibly a low water level in the bowl.

Both of these problems will cause a poor flush and frequent clogs. Which do you have? Did the plumber just auger the toilet or, did he remove the toilet and snake the line?

We have a one level house with a basement. Now the other bathroom is bubbling too. The plumber snaked both toilets. I haven't called him back yet. The bubbling just started this week. Sounds like I'll have to call him tomorrow. Thanks so much for your reply.

The bubbles are coming from where the waste goes down. The plumber just augered the toilet. Does he need to take the entire toilet off?
Thanks for you help. I really appreciate it.

You're welcome. If he doesn't correct the problem on the next trip, or at least advise you on what the problem is in a few minutes and how to approach it, you might need another Plumber that knows what's going on...
Good Luck.

If more than 1 toilet is affected it is probably the main line going out of the house. Are you on a sewer or septic?
