 Best Hangers for Copper Tube
Author: ant d (MA)

Hello All,
Just curious what type of hangers people like for hanging Copper tube perpendicular to joists in a cellar. Normally I like "mickey mouse ear" clips but they put the tube too tight to the joist and thus make it hard to insulate the tube. Any advice on this?

In general what are peoples favorite hangers? I saw a whole basement plumbed using "clic" hangers. I've never seen them used for anything other than electrical conduit. Anybody use them?

Use them all the time, a good insulator can cut out the interior of the insulation to accept the hanger. Another choice is the Sioux Chief full circle hanger.

If you want extra distance, we use the Sammy side winders, a piece of 3/8" rod, and a swivel ring hanger (em-lock). Granted, our company does a lot more comercial/industrial work, so this is definately over-kill, but it is nice... we're just used to building more stronger!!! Cost shoots up, though. Tried j-hooks? They'll get you down some and they're pretty quick to set...

Around here the bungalow busters use the full nail Sioux Clips. I usually use them for my repai work as well. Unless I have to hang a little lower for some reason, then I use the plastic J-hooks. There is a nice double J-hook, with the J's opposing each other. You install one hanger for 2 pipes, nice.

Peace out,

I mostly do commercial/residential. Use Clevis hangers and riser clamps with the appropriate material. With multiple pipe runs I make a "trapeze" with unistrut, threaded rod and unistrut clamps.

For water pipe I enjoy the full line of Hold-rite clamps.

Good Luck,

CJ

I have been using 1/2" and 3/4" Tube Talons for years.

I somehow end up with copper clad J-hooks that come in handy sometimes.

Plastic 1/2" and 3/4" J-hooks work really good in oddball places where the piping cannot rest against the wood.

Only drawback to plastic? Heat transfer through soldering is the only problem; just have to hold off on nailing the ones in that are close to solder joints, or just plan on wasting one if you can't figure out a way to hold the piping in place straight in order to solder.

Too often am I seeing half-clamps used in electrical that are galvanized, along with other clamps that are galvanized. Any vibration down the pike is a leak due to galvanic action.

But, some of the old timers knew that could happen and they would tape the galvanized or use newspaper between the pipe and hanger clamp.

The leak is not due to galvanic action, (if it were the steel hanger would be affected not the copper tubing), it is due to erosion as the pipe moves in the hanger. The tape or filler, prevents the copper from rubbing against the steel.

I have already used 3/4" copper 2 hole straps in a different method then normally used. Use one screw to hold strap and straighten out strap and let it half wrap around pipe. Flux and solder pipe to strap. Use larger strap is more distance required. When done right it makes a neat looking installation. GOOD LUCK

Band Iron and a 1/4-20 bolt and nut, I can adjust to any length and any kind of insulation.
