We recently purchased an older home (1958). We needed to make some repairs to outside hose bib on back of house. When we turned the water back on at the front of the house the valve wouldn't open at all. We capped it off and tried to get another valve. They don't make that kind anymore. Now we have NO water pressure inside the house. Where do we go from here?

Az, you removed the main shut-off valve and capped the pipe from the street?

Where in AZ? You will just have to replace the valve. Most valves in AZ were imports and thus parts are not available when one breaks.

I think they capped off the hose bib in the back? You probably have a gate valve shut off and the gate has wedged in the bottom of the valve in the closed position and the threads that move the gate up and down are stripped. It may be best to call a plumber to replace it.

We are in Phoenix. Do we just get another valve the same size? How do we get another one? If they don't make it anymore what do we do? hj, if this helps it is a John F. Long home!

You shouldnt need an exact replica of the vavle you have now. What matters is what type of piping you have and the size when you know this just replace the valve could be tuff if you have no experience with this

If I understand this correctly, your problem is with the main valve at the water meter. It seems to me like the city water department is responsible for that valve operating correctly. To install a new valve for your house they must shut off a valve somewhere upstream from you, otherwise you will have a flood that you can't stop.

Once the city water department has a good (new) main valve in place, you can connect your main line into it using a union of the proper size. I assume this is all the old galvanized pipe, so this job will require pipe cutting and threading tools. If the main pipe is very far underground, then digging a hole and working on the pipe in the hole could be difficult. A plumber may be your best option if you don't have the tools and don't care to buy them.

Az, unless it is(was?) something special of a valve, install a full port ball valve of the same pipe diameter.

Scottsdale. The make of valve depends on what the plumber had on the truck that day. JF Long homes were not known for high quality. Any valve will work, it just may require a little piping to do it. You are lucky since you may not have an irrigation system, pressure regulator valvle, and fire sprinkler system to deal with like the Scottsdale homes do.

It is the valve at the house and this is Arizona. A "deep" pipe here is 16".
